Called bets on European roulette are not called bets because you call the casino. They are called bets because you call out the numbers before placing the chips. You tell the croupier which section of the wheel you want covered. The mechanics are precise and the terminology matters.
First, the geometry. European roulette has 37 numbers, zero through 36. The wheel is not random distribution. Numbers cluster. 0 sits at the top. Moving clockwise: 26, 3, 35, 12, 28, 7, 29, 18, 22, 9, 31, 14, 20, 1, 33, 16, 24, 5, 10, 23, 8, 30, 11, 36, 13, 27, 6, 34, 17, 25, 2, 21, 4, 19, 15, 32. This order exists for a reason: to balance the high and low numbers, the odd and even, across the wheel's rotations.
Voisins du Zero means neighbors of zero. The bet covers 17 numbers: 22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2, 25. You are buying the section of the wheel containing zero and its immediate neighbors. The bet requires nine chips. You place five chips on the corner between 0 and 2. You place two chips on the 0-1 split. You place two chips on the 0-3 split. The payout structure is designed to reward hits in the zero zone while maintaining house edge.
Tiers: The Opposite Section
Tiers du Cylindre means "thirds of the wheel." It covers the numbers directly opposite zero: 27, 13, 36, 11, 30, 8, 23, 10, 5, 24, 16, 33. This is the section where if zero has neighbors on one side, the other side of the wheel is unprotected. The bet requires six chips: five chips on splits (27-30, 13-16, 36-11, 30-33, 8-5) and one corner. It is a position bet, not a coverage bet.
The grind's attraction to Tiers is straightforward. You flip the coverage. You play both sides of the wheel with different bet structures. Voisins gives you frequency. Tiers gives you position density. Neither covers the full wheel. Neither needs to. The game is about managing the sections you think have better probability.
Orphelins: The Forgotten Numbers
Orphelins are the numbers left uncovered when Voisins and Tiers take their sections. The bet covers 8 numbers in two groups. You place five chips on the 6-9 split and one chip each on 14, 17, 20, 31. This requires eight chips. The name is accurate: these are the orphaned numbers, the ones without institutional coverage on the wheel.
The Mathematics
None of these bets beats the house edge. That is not the point. Called bets are about organization. They let a player make decisions quickly. You say "Voisins" and the croupier executes your placement. The house edge on roulette is 2.7 percent. Called bets do not change that. What they do is let you express a theory about wheel mechanics or dealer signature without fumbling. If you think the wheel has a slight bias, you can test it. If you think a specific dealer spins with pattern, you can exploit it. The called bet framework makes testing possible. It does not make winning likely.
