Set Mining in Cash Games: Profitability Explained

Set mining is poker shorthand for playing small pocket pairs cheaply in hopes of hitting a set. The profitability math is tighter than most players think.

Myth: You need a coach to understand baccarat. Reality: Baccarat is the simplest game in the casino. One book gives you everything a coach would teach.

Claim: Baccarat Requires Mathematical Training

Reality: Baccarat has no decisions to make after you place the bet. You choose Banker, Player, or Tie. The dealer resolves the hand according to fixed rules. No choices. No strategy. No mathematical knowledge required.

Compare to blackjack where you decide to hit, stand, double down, or split. In baccarat, you sit and watch. The dealer follows a script.

The only math that matters is Kelly staking and house edge calculation. If the Banker bet wins 50.68% of the time and the house takes 5% of Banker wins, the effective payout is lower than the true odds. The Banker bet has a house edge of 1.06% (still better than Player at 1.24%).

A fifteen-minute explanation gives you the entire strategic framework. More books go deeper into history and betting systems, but the core mathematics fits on a page.

Claim: You Need to Understand the Card Values

Reality: The card values are simple. Ace is 1. Face cards are 0. Everything else is face value (2 is 2, 3 is 3, etc.). If your hand totals 15 and the next card is a 7, your new total is 2 (because 15+7=22, and you drop the tens digit to get 2).

A five-year-old can do this math. A coach won't teach you faster than reading a paragraph about it.

Claim: Patterns Exist and Smart Players Find Them

Reality: Card patterns in baccarat don't exist in any meaningful sense. The shoe is dealt from multiple decks. The outcome of hand 1 has no effect on hand 2. No correlation. No patterns. Each hand is independent.

This is where deep confusion happens. Players watch eight consecutive Player wins and think Player is "hot." It's not. Eight consecutive Player hands in an 8-deck shoe happens with probability around 0.39%. It's rare but it happens in random data. And it doesn't predict hand 9.

People believe in patterns because the human brain is a pattern-finding machine optimized by evolution to see signals in noise. That's why casino players believe in hot and cold shoes. The house counts on this cognitive bias.

Claim: A Coach Teaches You Bankroll Management

Reality: Bankroll management for baccarat is the same as bankroll management for any negative-expectation game. You bet 1-2% of your total roll per hand. You accept a house edge of 1.06% on Banker bets or 1.24% on Player bets.

Over 200 hands at $100 per hand at 1.06% edge, you expect to lose $212. The variance might make it $0 or -$1,000. But the long-term expectation is negative regardless of strategy.

No coach changes this math. No betting system changes this. The house edge is fixed in the rules. A coach can help you accept this emotionally, but that's therapy not coaching.

What You Actually Need

Read "Baccarat for the Business Man" by Lyle Stuart (1974). Twenty pages. $5 on used book sites. That's your education.

Learn the hand values. Ten minutes.

Understand Kelly staking. Fifteen minutes.

Accept that baccarat has a house edge and you will lose money long-term. This takes as long as you need to internalize it, which is the only part a coach helps with. They say it out loud and you believe them.

You can compress 20 hours of coaching into 90 minutes of reading. The benefit of reading is that it forces you to slow down. Listening to a coach lets you nod and forget.
