Self Custody

Self custody means you hold the private keys that control your crypto, instead of an exchange or a casino holding them for you. Whoever holds the key can sign transactions, so self custody puts both control and responsibility with the holder. No company can freeze those funds, and no company can recover them if the key is lost.

How do keys and seed phrases work?

Most wallets start from a seed phrase of 12 or 24 words defined by the BIP-39 standard. The words encode a large random number, which is turned into a seed. Under BIP-32, that seed derives a tree of private keys, and each private key gives a public address. Anyone with the seed phrase can rebuild every key in the wallet on any compatible device, which is why the phrase is the asset.

What does self custody protect against?

It removes the custodian. An exchange can freeze an account, report it, or fail and take customer balances with it. Funds in a wallet you control cannot be frozen by a provider, because no provider holds the key. Note what it does not hide: every transaction on a public chain is visible, and addresses can be linked to identities through exchanges, the travel rule and analytics firms.

What does it not protect against?

Your own signature. On Ethereum and similar chains, approving a token contract or signing a gasless permit can give another address the right to move your tokens. Drainer sites rely on that: the wallet is never hacked, the owner signs. Loss is the other risk. A seed phrase that is lost, destroyed or photographed by someone else ends the matter, and there is no support desk.

Why does it matter for crypto gambling?

Funding a casino from a self-custody wallet keeps the money out of a custodian's hands until the deposit, and withdrawals land somewhere no exchange controls. It also means each deposit is a signature you should read before you approve it.

How does this site cover it?

We explain the standards and the signing model from their specifications and from wallet and chain documentation, not vendor pages. Start with self custody crypto, then self custody web3 wallets for approvals and drainers. For privacy at the coin level, see the privacy coins hub.
